POCATELLO — Fire crews remain on the scene Wednesday morning after a late-night fire damaged a three-story apartment building in downtown Pocatello, displacing multiple residents and closing the street.
The fire was reported around 11:10 p.m. Tuesday at an apartment complex in the 300 block of North Hayes Avenue, near Pocatello High School.
All tenants safely self-evacuated the building, and no injuries were reported, according to Kim Stouse, public information officer for the Pocatello Fire Department.

“Four apartments were damaged in the fire, displacing the residents who lived in those units,” Stouse said. “Due to the extent of the damage, it is unclear when tenants will be able to return.”
The American Red Cross responded to assist displaced residents with temporary housing and other immediate needs.
Stouse said firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to nearby structures, though it took longer than usual to fully control the blaze because of the building’s history of renovations.
“Due to so many remodels, there were different roof lines and layers to get through,” Stouse said.
As of Wednesday morning, the fire was under control but not completely extinguished, with crews continuing to monitor and address hot spots.
North Hayes Avenue remains closed while crews continue their work, and the public is asked to avoid the area until further notice.
Fire investigators have been called to the scene and will begin examining the building to determine the cause of the fire once it is safe to do so.
The Pocatello Fire Department will release additional information when the investigation is complete.
