POCATELLO — People in eastern Idaho should prepare for strong winds expected to move through the region most of Thursday.

The National Weather Service office in Pocatello said winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are forecast from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday.

The high wind watch includes Teton Valley, the Arco/Mud Lake Desert, the Southern Hills and Albion Mountains, and the Upper Snake River Plain.

Officials say the strong winds could make travel difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles such as trucks, trailers and RVs.

The winds may also cause isolated damage to trees, power lines, signs and small outbuildings, along with the possibility of scattered power outages.

Residents are encouraged to secure or bring loose outdoor items inside before the winds arrive.

Weather officials also advise people to avoid standing near trees, branches and power lines during the wind event. Drivers who must travel are urged to use extra caution and keep both hands on the steering wheel.

Those operating large or high-profile vehicles may want to delay travel until winds subside Thursday evening, officials said.
